Materials

Skirt: PVC impregnated polyester. The base fabric is 100% polyester fibers. The material is woven on a loom width wise. The warp yarn runs longitudinally, providing strength and stiffness. The fill runs crosswise providing thickness and ties together the warp yarns. Thickness of the barrier or skirt material is .190 inch or 3/16 inch (.5 cm). Fabric is not coated but impregnated with PVC. This method of manufacturing allows for a zero ply fabric such that the "cover" and the carcass are one and cannot separate.

Floatation: The floatation is provided by an easily removed and replaceable hard shell polyethylene floats filled with closed cell polyurethane foam. Each float is through bolted to the barrier with six nylon (#13 1 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch [3.8 cm x 2.5 cm]) hex nut and bolt sets. The floats are bevel shaped rectangles. Each float is 18 inches long, 10 inches high, and 5.75 inches deep. There are 36 sets of floats per 100 foot section on the 24 inch model and 50 sets of floats per 100 foot section on the 36 inch model.

Ballast: Ballast is provided by lead weight sets, 1/2 pound each half through bolted to the barrier at the bottom of the skirt with a nylon (#13 1 3/4 inch by 1/2 inch) hex nut and bolt with opposing nylon washers. There are 50 sets of lead weights on the 36 inch model (50 pound ballast) and 25 sets on the 24 inch model (25 pound ballast). The boom is self-righting.

Tension Member: The tension member is belting fabric. Fabric has an overall tensile strength of 1,500 pounds per inch of wide or overall height of the boom. The 24 inch model has a tensile strength of 36,000 pounds (24 inch x 1,500 pounds).

Anchor Points: Although anchor points are not normally required on permanently deployed boom, the Port Security Barrier has two anchor points installed per 100 feet of boom. The anchor points are normally placed 25 feet from either end of the boom, but can be placed wherever they are most advantageous. Anchor points consist of male / female stainless steel eye bolts through bolted to the barrier with two each 4 inch diameter stainless steel backing plates. Anchor locations are marked with a highly visible anchor stencil directly above the anchor point assembly at the top of the boom.

Colors: Port Security Barrier is manufactured with high visibility yellow floats, yellow end connectors and hardware on a black barrier fabric. Options for the floats, bolts and end connectors are orange and black in any combination.
