SEP History

In 1972 in Seattle, Washington, a joint venture between Puget Sound Tug & Barge (a Crowley Company), Marine Power & Equipment, and Crosby & Overton formed an oil spill response organization to take advantage of an opportunity presented by the passage of the Clean Water Act (CWA-1972) and was named “Marine Oil Pickup Service” (MOPS). In 1976 Crowley bought out the other two partners and renamed the organization Crowley Environmental Services (CES). By 1988 CES had operational offices in Long Beach CA, San Francisco CA, Portland OR, Seattle WA, Anchorage AK, & San Juan, Puerto Rico. At the end of 1988 CES (less the San Juan Division) was sold to Chemical Processors of Seattle WA. Chemical Processors, majority owned by Burlington Resources, was subsequently renamed Burlington Environmental Inc. (BEI) and other environmental companies were also acquired under the BEI banner. In 1992 it was again sold and broken up into pieces and this time the BEI marine response and field services divisions were acquired by Foss Maritime Company and folded into the already established Foss Environmental Services (FES). The Product Sales group that operated under CES & BEI then began operating as Foss Environmental Worldwide to evidence their growing sales successes in the international marketplace.

Foss Maritime began operating an environmental division in 1982 and FES was formed to serve the environmental needs of Foss Maritime's customers as well as its own fleet of vessels. FES enjoyed much growth in 20 years from the initial six to over 180 employees.

On October 31, 2003 Foss Environmental Services was acquired by National Response Corporation (NRC) and became NRC Environmental Services (NRCES), an independent wholly owned subsidiary of NRC. Combined with NRC’s already significant West Coast based assets, including four ocean certified vessels strategically located from Neah Bay, Washington to Long Beach, California, the acquisition has resulted in the creation of the largest commercial spill response and environmental contracting organization operating in the United States West Coast.

The Products Group Foss Environmental Worldwide then became SEACOR Environmental Products (SEP), continuing to grow in the international marketplace. In 2006 SEP was removed as a subsidiary of NRC and became SEACOR Environmental Products LLC.
